Rocky (1976)

The film starts with the audience meeting Rocky, a struggling boxer from Philadelphia who works as a loan shark for a local mafia boss to make ends meet. Despite his tough exterior, Rocky is a kind-hearted man who dreams of making it big in the boxing world but has given up on that dream due to his lack of success in the ring. Reigning heavyweight champion Apollo Creed is looking for a local Philadelphia challenger and is looking for a challenge after his scheduled one backs out due to injury. Apollo ends up choosing Rocky! Rocky initially refuses the offer but eventually accepts it, seeing it as a chance to prove to himself and the world that he’s more than just a “bum” from the streets. Rocky starts training for the fight and along the way, he finds love and support from Adrian, a shy pet store clerk who becomes his girlfriend. Adrian becomes Rocky’s biggest supporter and motivator as he trains for the big fight. Through Rocky training, we get iconic scenes of training montages, where Rocky prepares for the fight with the help of his coach, Mickey. As the day of the fight approaches, Rocky’s nerves begin to take hold, and he starts to doubt his ability to win. However, he finds the strength to push through his fear and gives it his all in the ring. The climactic fight scene between Rocky and Apollo is intense and dramatic, with both fighters giving it their all. In the end, Rocky loses but is seen as a winner by the crowd and the public as a whole. This ends up being the lesson from the film as it emphasizes that it’s the journey that Rocky takes to get there, the lessons he learns, and the relationships he forms along the way. Overall, the film’s themes of perseverance, determination, and the power of the human spirit have made it a timeless classic. The performances by Stallone and Talia Shire, who plays Adrian, are both exceptional. In my opinion, “Rocky” is a must-watch film for anyone who loves sports, underdog stories, or just great cinema in general.
