Draft Day (2014)
Rated PG-13, 1h 50m

Draft Day is a sports drama film that focuses on the pressure of the NFL draft. The film centers around Sonny Weaver Jr who is the general manager of the Cleveland Browns, who trades up for the first pick in the draft in the beginning of the film. By doing this. Weaver faces significant pressure from team owner Anthony Molina, who wants him to select a quarterback, Bo Callahan, with the team’s first-round pick. However, Weaver is hesitant, as he is unconvinced that Callahan is the best player available. Weaver’s situation is further complicated by his personal life, as he is still grieving the recent loss of his father, a beloved former coach of the Browns. He is also dealing with a strained relationship with his girlfriend, Ali who works for the team as a salary cap analyst and the very excited fan base of the team as well as the media. The film hits its climax in an intense sequence as the draft finally takes place. Weaver must decide whether to follow his own instincts or appease the team owner and the fans by selecting Callahan, while also trying to maintain his personal relationships and make the best choices for the team’s future. Weaver decides not to take Calahan much to the dislike of the rest of the front office but makes 2 incredible trades afterwards to get back the draft picks they lost and set up the team very nicely in the future. Overall, Draft Day is a compelling and expertly crafted sports drama that provides an insightful look into the high-stakes world of professional football. The film is fast-paced and thrilling, with excellent performances from the cast and a well-constructed plot that keeps the audience engaged throughout. I think this is a great movie to watch for fans of the NFL as it does a good job of portraying an actual NFL draft room.
