Kicking & Screaming (2005)
Rated PG, 1 hour 35 minutes

Kicking & Screaming is a sports comedy film that centers around Phil Weston, a father who becomes the coach of his son’s youth soccer team. The film blends comedy with heartwarming moments, exploring themes of family, competition, and personal growth. Phil Weston is the son of Buck Weston, a highly competitive and overbearing father who coaches his grandson’s opposing soccer team, the Tigers. Buck has a longstanding rivalry with another coach, Mike Ditka, whose team consistently defeats the Tigers. When Phil’s son Sam is traded to Ditka’s team, the Gladiators, Phil feels hurt and left out that his father would do that to his grandson. Phil, now eager to prove himself and gain his son’s respect, volunteers to coach the last-place soccer team, the Tigers. He is determined to turn the inexperienced and disorganized team into winners, challenging his father’s coaching legacy in the process. The film humorously portrays Phil’s initial struggles as a coach, as he is overwhelmed by his players’ lack of skill and discipline. Phil seeks help from Ditka to help turn the team around. As the team begins to improve under Phil’s tutelage, they gain confidence and start winning games. The players form a strong bond in the process, developing a sense of teamwork. As they progress through the season, the Tigers find themselves on a collision course with the Gladiators in the championship game. The film explores the dynamics between parents, coaches, and young athletes in youth sports. It highlights the hyper-competitive nature of some parents and coaches, emphasizing the importance of sportsmanship and enjoying the game for its own sake. Throughout the film, Phil undergoes personal growth as he learns to balance his competitive drive with the joy of spending quality time with his son and the other players. Phil discovers the true meaning of coaching and the significance of instilling life lessons in his young team. The climax of the film comes with the championship match between the Tigers and the Gladiators. During the game both Phil and Buck are forced to reevaluate their coaching philosophies as they realize how competitive they got to be competitive and are not putting the kids’ enjoyment first. The game becomes an opportunity for reconciliation and personal growth for both father and son. Kicking & Screaming is a heartwarming sports comedy that celebrates the spirit of youth sports and the importance of family bonds. Will Ferrell’s comedic charm as Phil and the film’s blend of humor and heart make it an entertaining watch for audiences of all ages that I would highly recommend regardless of if you’re a sports fan or not.
