First Lie Wins by Ashley Elston
(2024) 340 pages

A lot of my friends have wanted to read this book, so I decided to as well. I think that it is a very fun read, and it has a lot of nice reveals and plot twists in it. Anyone who likes a thriller with a complex plot would like this book. One thing about that “complex” aspect I must note is the fact that it may be a bit hard to follow at times. Even from the summary/blurb, I was a bit confused. This feeling replicated itself many times during my read of the novel, but I eventually was able to piece everything together. Despite this, the plot is very enjoyable and I think that this book has a lot of potential. If anyone likes a thriller with a complex plot and a storyline centered around domestic issues, then this could be one that you may enjoy.

Abbott Elementary (2021- )
Rated TV-PG

Abbott Elementary is a mockumentary and workplace sit-com created by Quinta Brunson starring Quinta Brunson, Tyler James Williams, Sheryl Lee Ralph, and more. Recently has received 24 Emmy nominations.

The story follows a group of elementary school teachers in a predominately black school in Philadelphia. While their school is constantly being mismanaged and underfunded, the teachers are determined to provide the best resources and ensure their students’ success. The cast follows Janine Teagues, an optimistic second grade teacher, Jacob Hill, an awkward history teacher,  Barbara Howard, an old schooled kindergarten teacher, and Melissa Schmenti, a dedicated but cynical second grade teacher. Alongside the teachers there is Gregory Eddie a substitute and Ava Colemen the principal who is inept at her job but provides comic relief.

I truly love this show, it’s sharp, witty, and has a lot of heart. From commentating on the state of public education today to sincere characters this show has everything I’m looking for in a comedic television show. I generally enjoy sitcoms such as the Office and Parks and Recreation, and this show recreates feelings similar to those. It has the realistic and wholesome appeal that I find is  lacking in other shows on the air today.

The show also comments on the state of public education today, as someone who is attending public school in Long Island I am grateful for the resources and teachers it provides. However I often forget that not everyone has the same experience in school as I do, recently Mayor Eric Adam cut 100 million dollars in public education funding in New York City. This show presents the reality of thousands of public schools across our nation. Abbott Elementary is extremely relevant in this day and age.

Lastly, this show is extremely funny. The writers including Brunson are so talented providing great comedic timing and creative but realistic plot lines. The characters are relatable and you genuinely learn to care about their journeys and goals. The actors who play them are also all stand out performances. All the characters feel distinct and important to the story. I highly recommend this show to anyone who enjoys sitcoms or just want to watch a show that is heartfelt and entertaining.
