Ghostbusters-Afterlife (2021)

This movie is an excellent choice for fans who loved the original Ghostbusters franchise as well as those who have never seen them. It starts off with a family forced to move into their deceased grandfather’s estate due to money trouble. The family consists of a single mom and her two kids. They move to an old dirt farm in Oklahoma. Within days of living there, they make friends and discover a huge family secret—their grandfather was once of the infamous Ghostbusters from the ’80s. Following in their grandfather’s footsteps, the family with the help of their newfound friends and some old ones, help to save the world from Ghosts. Both the mother and kids find fulfillment through their new relationships while healing old wounds

This movie is great for all ages. The ghosts are not terribly scary and there is a ton of humor and adventure throughout. I highly recommend this for a family movie night.

Dog Shelter Valentines

We met on Zoom with Leslie Sattler of Green Earth Crafts on Monday, February 7. She showed us how to draw pictures of dogs to decorate paper placemats. These placemats, and also metal food/water bowls, will be given to a local shelter. When a dog gets adopted from the shelter, the adopters will also be given a placemat and bowl. Their new dog’s first gift. Everyone did such a great job!

Preparing the Seed Library- Part 1

Did you know that the Syosset Public Library is launching a Seed Library?

Yup, on March 21st you and your family can “borrow” seeds to grow in a garden at your home. The best part about it besides having all that fresh produce is there are no late fees! Ha! Find out more about it and programs related to gardening here.

For Part 1 of Preparing the Seed Library, we asked teens to help us get the seed packets ready. We needed the seed envelopes labeled. That night they labeled 1,000 envelopes!

This is just the beginning… see what happens next in Preparing the Seed Library- Part 2!

It Ends with Us by Colleen Hoover (2016)
Total Pages: 376
Personal Rating: 5/5

It Ends with Us was truly one of the best books I have read. The narrator, Lily Bloom, grew up in an abusive home and struggled to understand why her mother wouldn’t leave her father. Throughout her life, she viewed her mother and women like her mother as weak. That all changes when she gets herself into a very similar situation. The book starts off after her father’s funeral, Lily is now in her 20’s. She was asked to give his eulogy and chose to stand there silently after she claimed she would be listing all the wonderful things about him. It was a very emotional day for her because she didn’t know how to feel, sad, because her father died, or relieved because the person who hurt her mother and her family was finally gone. Lily decided to go get some peace and think by going onto the roof of a nearby building, which had gardens on it because she loves plants and is comforted by them. This is where she meets Ryle, a neurosurgeon with who she instantly connects. A year later, Lily opens a flower shop and hires a woman, Allysa, who becomes her best friend. She soon realized that Allysa’s brother is Ryle. Ryle and Lily then reconnect and after some time begin to date. One night they go out to dinner and Lily realizes that the waiter is her childhood love, the homeless boy she used to take care of. The book then shows flashbacks of all of her time with him from the journals she wrote as a child. At this point, you first start to see Ryle become very jealous and angry, but nothing follows that. Then, one night as Lily and Ryle were making dinner and Ryle burnt his hand in the oven and dropped the food. Lily then laughed because the food went everywhere and Ryle slapped her extremely hard, knocking her completely off the table. Ryle then apologizes and promises that it will never happen again, so Lily being in love decides to stay with him. They then get married and the abuse continues. Every time Lily or Ryle interact with the waiter from the restaurant, Lily’s past love, Ryle gets jealous and hurts Lily. She finds herself in the same cycle her mother was in and doesn’t know how to make it stop. Now to the end of the book. Lily finds herself in the hospital after her worst attack yet. The waiter, Atlas, accompanies her to the hospital and takes her in. Lily realizes she is pregnant with Ryle’s baby and finds herself in her worst nightmare. She has to make the decision that is best for her child, to give her child both parents, but in an abusive home, or to leave her child in a single-parent household. As the book is called It Ends with Us, Lily decides to end the cycle of abusive households and separate from Ryle, freeing herself. This book was so well written. It allows the reader to have an inside perspective of someone in this kind of relationship, especially one who thought out of all people she would be the last the end up like that.

Winter Animal Creations

January 31st, we had a program called Winter Animal Keychains. Teens pick up their kits containing, Sculpey clay, toothpicks, and a keychain. Doesn’t look like a lot, does it?

What are some things you would want to create with this kit?

Our presenter, Chris Vivas, showed us how to make different winter animals. We learn to cut things with a butter knife, roll the clay out with a pen and use the toothpick to make little details. He was having as much fun as all of us! Towards the end of the program, he shared the instructions on how to safely bake the clay in the oven so they would get hard.
