Muse Concert Review

muse2.jpg
Last night I had the great pleasure of seeing the band Muse play at Madison Square Garden. For those of you who don’t know this band, get yourself on the internet and look them up, because they are awesome performers, on their 5 studio albums and in concert. Better yet, stop by the library and check out one of the Muse CDs that we own.
See what I did there? I just made this post relevant to the library.
Now back to the concert stuff.
Their opening act was the band Silversun Pickups, and they sounded good, but due to the amazing stage that Muse had set up (more on that in a bit), we couldn’t see them so well. From my view of the projection screens, I think the bass player looked a bit like Maggie Gyllenhaal.
Anyway, on to the main event. The stage had three massive columns silk-screened to look like skyscrapers. Once the music started, the “buildings lit up like an office building turning on the lights one-by one. Silhouettes of people walking, and later, falling began to appear and as the intro reached its crescendo, the fabric creating the walls of the building fell – revealing the 3 members of Muse on raised platforms. It was very cool and we were thrilled to know we didn’t have the worst seats in the house anymore. They totally played to the entire crowd – and the drum kit was even spinning around for our viewing pleasure.
They opened their set with the first 2 songs off their latest album The Resistance: Uprising and Resistance. From their they played some of the songs of their back catalogue, but mosly stuff of their latest album. They gave really energetic performances throughout, with lots of running and spinning around the stage. I have to say, the crowd was on their feet from the first notes to the end of the encores. A stellar performance was given on guitar, vocals and piano by band frontman Matt Bellamy thoughout – who sometimes sound a bit like Freddie Mercury (lead singer of the old band Queen, kids).
One of the stranger moments was when giant “eyeballs” dropped from somewhere and were filled with confetti. Eyes were bouncing around the crowd, which was a “sight to see” (get it?).
Muse is currently on tour to support the band’s 5th studio album, The Resistance which was released in September. For more info check out their website: http://muse.mu/
